What made you start your business?

I started my business during the pandemic.  I sort of was just playing around you know just treating it like a hobby, passing time during quarantine. I decided to take a leap of faith once the world started to open back up. Of course, it was discouraging in the beginning being a new makeup artist. I sacrificed a lot of my time for the uncertain. I could have easily gone back to my career job in healthcare but by this time I have gotten used to working for myself and being my own boss and generating my own revenue. However, nothing was wrong continuing my 9-5 job, but I took that opportunity to see a different avenue for myself. As working adults, we are so accustomed and routine to a day-to-day schedule that we rarely have time to tap into our passion or the things we want to do outside of our dedicated schedule. My clientele grew within a matter of months & by this time I knew that this was a passion for me and even more confirmation that I鈥檝e made the right decision to further pursue. Long story short the pandemic woke up a passion & a hustle & grind I never knew I had. We鈥檙e here with it now and I can鈥檛 be happier.

How does it empower you as a Black Woman in the Beauty Field?

It empowers me as a Black Women to show that we too can be giving the same space and opportunities while being the minority. Being able to bring unique insight into product development, marketing, and inclusivity, ensuring that the industry prioritizes the concerns and preferences of black consumers.

By Katherine O’Malley | Stacker

It’s time to close the funding gap and open more women-owned small businesses.

As of 2019, there were more than 13 million women-owned businesses (including sole proprietorships and employer firms). That sounds like a lot, right?

But that number actually hides a trillion-dollar . According to , if women-owned (and minority-owned) businesses were funded at the same rate as white male-owned businesses, gross receipts could increase by $4.4 trillion. And that was before the pandemic disproportionately impacted both women-owned businesses and the .

Women can start any small business they want鈥攊ncluding full-time or side businesses, , and home-based businesses. takes a look at services that are in high demand for female entrepreneurs in 2023.

Growth industries for 2023

To be a successful small business, you need customers. What’s the easiest way to get customers? Give them what they want. With that in mind, here are some industries that are poised for growth in 2023 and beyond.

Cybersecurity

Data is an asset, and our online lives are here to stay, so businesses and customers alike need solid methods for protecting their online identities. No wonder ranked cybersecurity mesh as a top IT security trend”鈥攐ne that women can help develop and grow.

Gone are the days of solely needing secure buildings and vehicles; our digital-everything has evolved cybersecurity into a mesh of protection around our online identities and transactions.

Delivery services

is another “boring” business that’s become incredibly profitable in the post-pandemic-lockdown “new normal.” Consumers have changed their behavior: items are now expected to magically appear on our doorsteps. This means that delivery services industries are facing incredible growth: .

Education and e-learning

The is projected to become a . And there’s no slowdown ahead, with multiple avenues for growth: “E-learning won’t be the only potential trend in the education market. Tutoring options to help school kids ‘catch up’ on lost learning will be needed,” too. And businesses utilize their own to educate employees and train them on new skills.

Fintech

encompasses all those businesses that make mobile banking, peer-to-peer payments, and even contactless checkout at the grocery store possible. Fintech has its sights set on helping the \鈥攚idening its reach even more. And as more and more users have gotten accustomed to banking from their phones and stores remain contactless for payment, the potential for growth remains high.

Fitness

The fitness industry has had to make one of the pandemic’s most dramatic pivots, as gyms, yoga studios, and other exercise facilities temporarily shuttered to in-person clients during the pandemic’s onset. This pivot led to an as well as numerous other businesses creating new virtual content for at-home workouts. If you have a creative idea for virtual or hybrid fitness, this is a booming sector to explore further.

Human resources

No matter the industry, workers and owners alike are facing new workplace challenges as offices pivot between remote, in-person, and hybrid and as in the wake of the pandemic. This means an increased demand for human resources personnel. “Most small businesses need employees to grow their businesses. This is where the HR industry could explode, as small businesses that offer HR outsourcing services鈥an help other small businesses with their HR needs.”

Longevity

We’ve entered what many demographers are calling the “gray tsunami:” aging baby boomers. “As boomers age through their 60s, 70s, 80s and increasingly beyond, the ‘big bulge’ of the boomer generation will contribute to the overall aging of the US population in coming decades,” said Stella Ogunwole, a demographic statistician This aging population represents new workforce needs, as aging-in-place services (vs. nursing homes and skilled living facilities) become more desirable in a pandemic-inflected world.

Mental health

A national shortage of mental health specialists and an ever-growing need for their services represents a (frustrating) widening gap that bears great possibilities for small businesses who can meet that need. “On average, , so it’s going to take entrepreneurs to step up to the plate to fill the void.” This requires some specialization, but if you’re eligible to provide mental health services鈥攐r brainstorm business ideas with those who can鈥攖he opportunity is yours to seize.

Online shopping

We’re shopping online, and for a wider range of products, than ever before. Digital Commerce 360 estimates that “ over the past two years鈥攁nd yes, that’s billion with a b. E-commerce offers numerous growth opportunities for small businesses, whether you’re a B2B shipping company who can help deliver the goods or a boutique with unique items to sell.

Telehealth

You’re probably noticing a trend at this point: these growth sectors have largely arisen due to the pandemic’s effects on our everyday lives, and the way we receive healthcare is no exception. Between virus-spread mitigation and the temporary pivoting of hospital space to COVID wards, many doctors have embraced telehealth as a safer, easier option for patients and providers alike.

Virtual conferences and event planning

The in-person events industry has faced tremendous upheaval and uncertainty鈥攁nd it’s poised to make an equally tremendous comeback. While Americans are returning to the “new normal” and attending events, conferences, and concerts in person, virtual and hybrid events remain popular as well. Virtual experiences won’t go away anytime soon: they fulfill the promise of technology designed to connect us across long distances鈥ur lives have permanently gone online.

What makes these growth industries?

Demographic changes, changes in consumer behavior, and of course, the pandemic have made these industries ripe opportunities for entrepreneurs, especially for women.

For example, longevity industry projections are based on demographics鈥攎ore senior citizens mean more services for the elderly are needed. Similarly, as digital-first becomes the norm for consumers and businesses, cybersecurity and technical industries at large will grow.

Other industries may experience an increase in customers due to the long-term impacts of the pandemic. For example, instances of mental health issues鈥攕ubstance abuse, anxiety, and depression鈥攈ave risen to the impact of economic shutdowns and social isolation. And adjustments made due to social-distancing rules have forced some (e.g., conferences and events)鈥攖hus opening up whole new customer markets. Some sectors, like telehealth and fintech, experienced accelerated consumer adoption due to pandemic-related closures.

What made you start your business? Let us know about your new beauty product launch?

The story behind Ooume is deeply rooted in my journey as a first-time mother and the desire to find safe, effective hair care solutions for my son, Amir. During my pregnancy, I was overwhelmed by the lack of options for baby hair care, especially for curly and thick hair like I knew it would be. The struggles continued after his birth, with conventional baby shampoos leaving his curls dry and frizzy. It was during a bath time, where I used his products on my own hair due to me running out of my haircare and not wanting to mix adult hair care products in our bath water, that the idea struck me 鈥 why not create a hydrating shampoo and conditioner that could work for both babies and their parents?

But bringing this idea to life was far from easy. I encountered numerous challenges, from finding manufacturers who shared my values to navigating the complexities of product formulation. However, with each setback, my determination only grew stronger. The name “Ooume” itself is a tribute to Amir’s early expressions and carries a deeper meaning of greatness in Japanese.

The passing of my grandmother further fueled my resolve to create my own products, drawing inspiration from my great-grandmother’s legacy of crafting homemade hair concoctions. With passion and dedication, I delved into the world of product formulation, driven by the belief that every curl and coil deserves gentle, non-toxic care.

Today, Ooume is more than just a brand 鈥 it’s a testament to the power of maternal intuition and the strength that comes from following your heart. It’s about celebrating the beauty of natural hair and providing families with products they can trust.

How does it empower you as a Black Woman in the Beauty Field?

Ooume empowers me as a Black Woman in the Beauty Field by providing a platform to celebrate and showcase our natural beauty and tresses. In an industry that often promotes Eurocentric standards of beauty, Ooume stands as a beacon of representation and inclusivity, embracing and celebrating the diversity of our hair textures and skin tones. Through Ooume, I aim to inspire confidence and self-love among Black women, men, girls and boys, encouraging them to embrace their natural hair and beauty without conforming to societal norms. Additionally, Ooume serves as a testament to the entrepreneurial spirit and creativity within the Black community, proving that we can thrive and excel in the beauty industry on our own terms.

What are 3 of your favorite beauty items you can’t live without?

First and foremost, Ooume’s Hydrating Baby Shampoo & Conditioner holds a special place in my routine. While it’s designed for babies, its gentle formula works wonders on my sensitive skin and helps rejuvenate my curls with much-needed hydration. What I love most is its fragrance-free formula, which ensures a gentle and soothing experience without any overpowering scents.

Next up is my trusty Power Peptide from Skin by Brownlee & Co. This little gem has become my go-to for maintaining clear, hydrated skin. With its gentle cleansing properties and powerful hydration, it keeps breakouts at bay while leaving my complexion feeling refreshed and revitalized.

Finally, I have to give a shoutout to my Gloss Up Color Rich Lip Gloss by the Lip Bar. As someone who’s always on the go, having a reliable lip product is essential, and this gloss delivers every time. Not only does it provide the perfect hint of color and shine, but its moisturizing formula keeps my lips feeling soft and hydrated throughout the day.

These three beauty staples have truly become essential parts of my self-care routine, helping me feel confident and radiant every step of the way.

Anything else our beauty readers should know about you?

Absolutely! As a beauty enthusiast and entrepreneur, I’m deeply passionate about creating products that not only enhance natural beauty but also reflect my own journey and experiences. Growing up, I struggled to find hair care products that catered to the needs of my curls, and that frustration only intensified when I became a mother and faced similar challenges with my son’s hair. That’s when the idea for Ooume was born 鈥 out of a desire to fill a gap in the market and provide safe, effective, and inclusive hair care solutions for families like mine.

Beyond just creating products, I see Ooume as a platform to foster connection and empowerment within the beauty community. I believe that beauty is about more than just outward appearance 鈥 it’s about self-care, confidence, and embracing our unique features. That’s why I’m committed to creating a space where everyone feels seen, heard, and celebrated, regardless of their hair texture or background.

Whether it’s through sharing personal stories, motherhood, offering advice, or simply connecting with fellow beauty lovers, I’m dedicated to building a community where authenticity and inclusivity are at the forefront. Because at the end of the day, beauty is about so much more than just what’s on the surface 鈥 it’s about embracing our true selves and celebrating the beauty within each and every one of us.

What made you start your business?

I started my business because I am a plus size woman. And I have been my entire life. I was the plus size woman, who loved fashion forward clothes. But my weight always went up and down. So, I would try to starve myself or workout crazy in the gym just to fit into society perfect size. So, I could fit the clothes that I wanted to buy. I decided this time when my weight went back up from sitting in the house during 2020. That I was going to love myself at every size. I鈥檓 not just going to dress down or in rags because I couldn鈥檛 fit into the fashion forward clothes that I want at a plus size for a woman. I decided that I was going to start a plus size boutique to wear the clothes and to fix this problem for other plus size women.

How does it empower you as a Black Woman in the Beauty Field?

My business venture into plus size clothing empowers me as a black woman clothing owner. Because it allows me to solve this problem for all plus size women, and especially black and brown women by offering us plus size clothing that鈥檚 fashion forward comfortable clothing for women of our size. I also have a special place in my heart to help Black and brown women, we are women of so many shapes and sizes. It makes me feel empower to help all plus size women look good.

A groundbreaking event is on the horizon for aspiring entrepreneurs and innovators. RoadPitch, a dynamic traveling pitch tour, will stop in Cincinnati on March 13. This will be the fourth city on the Midwest tour. RoadPitch partners with the Blacks in Technology (BIT) Foundation to foster innovation, diversity, and economic growth.

RoadPitch is the largest traveling pitch tour designed to address the funding gap for diverse entrepreneurs in tech. Founded by Meagan Turner and Rohan Brown, RoadPitch allows Black tech founders building in specific industries to pitch in multiple cities in a week-long sprint, with a focus on providing opportunities for these founders to raise pre-seed or seed capital from investors. The upcoming Midwest tour will take place March 11-16, with the RoadPitch team traveling to Ann Arbor, Detroit, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Indianapolis, Chicago, and Milwaukee.

Turner, a Cincinnati native, said, “I am excited to bring our group of founders to town to explore the Cincy tech ecosystem and hopefully identify resources to keep them here.”

The evening event begins with a mixer and fireside chat where the goal is to bring together the local startup ecosystem and Black professionals throughout the city. The highlight of the event will be a live pitch competition where both traveling founders and five local Black tech founders will present their startups to ecosystem leaders, investors, and community members.

“The Blacks in Technology brand, with over 30,000 members spanning 80-plus chapters located across 20-plus countries, is a global brand,鈥 said Greg Greenlee, founder of Blacks in Technology. 鈥淥ur mission — to increase the representation and participation of Black people in technology — comes through not only in the work that we do but in the partnerships we forge. This is why we are so excited to partner with RoadPitch to help bring opportunities to our community via the RoadPitch tour. We want to see our community show up and show out, so please come out and support these events!”

The RoadPitch evening in Cincinnati is on Wednesday, March 13, from 5:30-8:30 p.m., at Union Hall, 1311 Vine St. in OTR. The event is FREE and open to the public.
