Exploring the philosophical aspects of chemistry through the study of chemical reactions.

16 January 2024 19:00-20:00

Introduction
It is fairly uncontroversial that physics and biology play an important role in answering philosophical questions. On the other hand, the relation of chemistry to philosophy has not been so evident neither to philosophers nor to chemists. The aim of this talk is to illuminate the philosophical issues that arise in connection to chemical matters. Through the case study of chemical reactions, I show how some of the oldest and most persistent philosophical concepts, namely that of causation- can be explored in novel ways. Investigating the nature of causation from the perspective of chemistry can illuminate how we understand chemical reactions as well. In fact, a philosophical investigation of chemistry can contribute to a more nuanced appreciation of chemistry and its impact to humanity.
