1st CBIC Chemical Biology Leadership Retreat for Early Career Researchers

13 - 15 September 2023, Newcastle upon Tyne, United Kingdom

This event is by invitation only

Introduction
The inaugural Å·ÃÀAV Chemistry Biology Interface Community (CBIC) Leadership Retreat for early career researchers aims to bring together newly-appointed academic group leaders and early-career industry professionals from the UK and associated international chemical societies to network, discuss their independent research and meet with senior leaders in the field to develop their leadership skills.

The meeting aims to:
  • Enable recently appointed researchers to build UK-wide and international networks and connections, and to link with senior members of the community.
  • Provide advice, training and peer-to-peer support on soft skills and challenges relevant for this career stage.
  • Build awareness of research across the breadth of the chemistry-biology interface, and provide opportunities for general discussions about the field with senior research leaders (e.g. future research directions, challenges and opportunities across the field).
  • Provide a forum for CBIC early career researchers to present their independent research
The biennial meeting will run from 13-15th September 2023 at Newcastle University (Newcastle upon Tyne, UK) and will be uniquely supported by representatives from the Å·ÃÀAV, academic journals, leadership mentors and eminent scientists from the field of chemical biology.

The programme will consist of three days focussed on research, leadership and collaboration.

Day 1: Introductions, research presentations, round-table discussion. Plenary lecture.
Day 2: Leadership coaching. Fireside chats with research leaders. Plenary lecture.
Day 3: Emerging innovations in chemical biology, chalk-talk presentations.

Attendance will be on a competitive basis and chosen from submitted applications to ensure well balanced representation across the chemical biology community. Applications are welcomed from early career lecturers, research fellows and industry scientists within 5 years of their initial appointment (full time equivalent excluding any relevant career breaks). Applications should be prepared using the expression of interest template provided and include a 1-page CV, research and motivation statement. The deadline for applications is Friday 28th April 2023. There are 25 places available, and the successful applicants will be informed by 3rd May, at which time a link to register for the event will be provided.

The cost of attending the retreat is £350 per delegate and this includes two nights of accommodation at the Sandman Signature Hotel in Newcastle city centre and two conference dinners. Financial support to cover registration and travel costs may be available through the Å·ÃÀAV Chemistry Biology Interface Council.
