Chemical Science Symposium 2021: Biohybrid Approaches to Sustainable Energy Conversion

13 - 15 September 2021, United Kingdom

Introduction
This virtual meeting is the next iteration in the Chemical Science symposia series hosted by the 欧美AV.

Under the banner of our flagship diamond open access journal, Chemical Science, we鈥檒l be shining a spotlight on cutting-edge chemistry research and giving it the sort of attention that drives scientific progress and makes a difference.

We warmly invite you to join us online for the third Chemical Science symposium, and look forward to welcoming you to the discussion.

About the symposium

Leading chemical and biological science researchers and emerging investigators from a broad range of backgrounds will come together to explore and celebrate the theme of the 2021 symposium: Biohybrid Approaches to Sustainable Energy Conversion.

Find out more about the 2021 Chemical Science Symposium in this video:

The invited speakers for this symposium will discuss research of microbial/living cell-hybrid, protein-hybrid approaches and bio-inspired approaches to sustainable energy conversion, inspiring conversations over a range of topics, including:
  • Semi-artificial photosynthesis
  • Bioenergetics
  • (Photo)bioelectrochemistry
  • Energy and electron transfer across bio-material interfaces
  • Living biohybrids
  • Protein-based biohybrids
  • Biomimetics
The scientific programme of talks will be complemented by online networking opportunities and digital poster sessions.

Networking & Discussion sessions

There are four networking & discussion sessions through the programme. Details of which are as follows:

Publishing for Impact and Meet the Chemical Science Editorial Team
Join the Chemical Science Editorial Team and members of the Editorial Board for a publishing-focussed discussion session. In this session, the Chemical Science team will talk about the editorial process and give tips & tricks to help authors prepare their article, select the right journal and get their paper noticed after publication. A Q&A session will be included, enabling delegates to talk freely with our editorial team and editors on all aspects of the publishing process, including how the team operate at Chemical Science and what the journal does to make sure that the content it publishes is accessible and visible to its broad readership.

Themed networking session
The theme of this session will be voted on during the first session in the symposium.

Building an academic research career in a multidisciplinary environment: The skills you need and how to approach your career strategically
Doing multidisciplinary research can help to:
  • Broaden your experience
  • Build your academic networks
  • Open up new funding opportunities
This approach can be useful to generate a range of research ideas that can be tailored to different funding calls. It also widens your opportunities for collaborations and brings in expertise which you don鈥檛 already have. Learning from the collaboration, which can help on a particular project, can also open up other new research and career areas for you too. Gain further insights in this session from the 欧美AV Career Management Team.

Inclusion & diversity in the chemical sciences: Driving change in research culture and scholarly publishing
The 欧美AV believe that the chemistry should be for everyone but sadly our recent research has shown that the chemical sciences are not yet a fair and welcoming environment for all. In this interactive session we will consider headline findings from the recent reports such as Diversity landscape of the chemical sciences, Breaking the barriers, and Exploring the workplace for LGBT+ physical scientists. We will hear about some of the resulting actions the 欧美AV have taken, such as our Grants for Carers, Assistance Grants, Bullying and harassment support service, and LGBT+ toolkit, to combat some of these issues.

Our goal, outlined in our I&D strategy to 2025, is to increase the diversity of people choosing and fulfilling their potential in the chemical sciences for a truly inclusive community.

We will also share findings from our report Is Publishing in the chemical sciences gender biased? which revealed that gender differences exist at each step of the publishing profile and their combined effect puts women at a significant disadvantage when publishing their research and in turn progressing their research careers. As a result of this analysis and as part of our continued strategy on inclusion and diversity we developed our new Framework for action in scientific publishing and have convened and partnered with over 40 other international publishing organisations in a Joint commitment for action on inclusion and diversity in publishing.

Read a specially selected collection of articles chosen by the symposium chairs

The symposium chairs Nicolas Plumer茅, Erwin Reisner and Jenny Zhang have curated a specially selected collection of articles from Chemical Science and its sister journals ChemComm and Chemical Society Reviews that exemplify the exceptional and innovative research being conducted in this area.
