The Radiochemistry Group are pleased to announce that the biennial Young Researchers Meeting will be taking place in virtual form for 2021. Young Researchers in academia and industry are invited to present their current research work in radiochemistry in oral format at the meeting, which will be held over three sessions on the afternoons of 13-15 July 2021.
Young Researchers Award
As always, the best presentation at the meeting, judged by the Radiochemistry Group Committee, will win the prestigious Young Researchers Award. The award winner will receive a cash prize of £150 and the honour of having their name added to those of previous recipients on the coveted trophy, a bust of Marie Curie, which remains in their possession until the next meeting. The winner also receives funding from the Å·ÃÀAV Radiochemistry Group to present their research at an international scientific conference in the future.
Guest Speakers
This year, we have invited some distinguished scientists to give keynote talks at the meeting. Talks will be on a range of radiochemistry topics of interest, including careers in the industry. Confirmed to speak are:
Prof. Kath Morris (University of Manchester)
Environmental radiochemistry - underpinning radioactive waste disposal and environmental remediation
Paul Thompson (AWE)
Forty years in radiochemistry - then and now; changes and challenges
Dr Fiona Rayment OBE (National Nuclear Laboratory)
A career in nuclear
Dr Lav Tandon (Los Alamos National Laboratory)
Career reflections of a radio-analytical chemist in support of international security missions
Prof. Wade Allison (Oxford University)
Why radiation is so much safer than fire
Dr Mark Sarsfield (National Nuclear Laboratory)
Radioisotope power systems: fuelling knowledge of the solar system
Programme
The meeting will be held on GoToWebinar and will be split into three sessions (all times are BST):
13 July 2021 - 13:00 - 17:00
14 July 2021 - 13:00 - 16:30
15 July 2021 - 13:00 - 16:30
Each session will open and close with a keynote talk. Oral presentations from Young Researchers will be limited to 15 minutes in length, with an additional 5 minutes allocated for questions at the end. As far as is possible, we will aim to group presentations by topic area (medical, environmental, nuclear etc). Details of the final programme will be circulated to registered attendees prior to the meeting.
Abstract submission
Abstracts should be no longer than a single page of A4 (including talk title, authors and affiliations), and should be submitted to rsc.radiochemistry.yrm2021@gmail.com. The dealine for abstract submission has been extended to 25 June 2021.
If your abstract is accepted, you will be sent confirmation of your presentation slot by the organising committee, along with further instructions on how to prepare your presentation and use the GoToWebinar software. We will aim to contact you by 14 June 2021.
