Å·ÃÀAV Desktop Seminars with SBQ Organic Chemistry Division

1 October 2020 15:00-16:30, Brazil

Introduction
Å·ÃÀAV Desktop Seminars in Organic Chemistry with the Brazilian Chemical Society 2020 are an initiative from the Å·ÃÀAV and the Brazilian Chemical Society to bring cutting-edge research directly to you!

Covid-19 has exposed us to a new reality where the virtual world is much more important than before. In order to keep our students engaged at the frontiers of Organic Chemistry, we have organized a weekly webinar series that is a joint collaboration between the Å·ÃÀAV (Å·ÃÀAV) and the Organic Chemistry Division of the Brazilian Chemical Society (SBQ). It is an alternative way to share work and interact with potential collaborators.

The sections will alternate between Brazilian and international speakers, in some cases with the opportunity for a selected Brazilian early career researcher to engage with the audience by presenting their recent independent career developments.

Programme

15:00 Introductions and welcome
15:10 Main Speaker with Q&A
16:05 Closing remarks
16:15 Close

Speaker

Gerald. E. K. Branch Distinguished Professor F. Dean Toste
The Evolution of Homogeneous Gold Catalysis for Organic Synthesis

This lecture will focus on the development of homogeneous gold catalysis, from the initial discoveries to the present day challenges.  An emphasis will be placed on the concepts and mechanistic underpinnings for these developments.

Speakers
Professor F. Dean Toste, University of California, Berkeley , United States

Dean was born in 1971 in Terceira, Azores, Portugal, but soon moved to Canada. While at the University of Toronto, he majored in Chemistry and Biochemistry and went on to obtain a M.Sc. in Organic Chemistry. He then pursued his Ph.D. with Barry Trost at Stanford and a post-doctoral appointment with Robert Grubbs at Caltech. Dean is currently the Gerald E. K. Branch Distinguished Professor of Chemistry at UC Berkeley. Research in the Toste group is primarily aimed toward the development of catalysts, catalytic reactions and methods for organic synthesis. Ultimately, we are interested in using these methods to address problems in the synthesis of complex molecules possessing interesting structural, biological and physical properties. As such, our research program spans the areas of organic synthesis, catalysis, and organometallic chemistry.
