Top of the Bench - University of Liverpool

14 November 2019 09:30-15:00, Liverpool, United Kingdom

Introduction
This is a chemistry competition which aims to stretch your brightest and most able chemists in Yrs 9, 10 and 11. A team of four pupils, two from Yr 9, one from year 10 and one from year 11 will take part in three activities: a 2hrs lab task, a 1hr exam and a poster presentation.

As in the previous years, the regional Top of the Bench competitions will this year be held at Liverpool University on Thursday, 14th November and at Wirral Metropolitan College on Friday, 15th November from 9:30 till 15:00.

The poster will have to be completed prior to the event. The topic of this year’s poster is: “Celebrating IYPt – 150 years of the Periodic Table”. Further guidelines for the preparation of the poster can be found on the attached sheet.

In the past, it has been common practice for a teacher to accompany the team, mainly for safe travelling and in case an emergency arises during the competition. We are aware that it has become more and more difficult for teachers to be allowed a day off to accompany a team of four. Also, there is nothing to do for the teachers during the event as all tasks must be completed by the pupils alone. It is, therefore, perfectly acceptable that the team is accompanied by any CRB checked adult, such as a lab technician or a parent.

To enter a team from your school, simply email Dr H Aspinall or Dr I Buschmann the name and address of your school and the name of the person to contact at the school for further information.

There will be prizes for the winning team, the runner-ups and the best poster of each heat, together with prizes for the best individual of each year group. In addition, the overall six best posters will be presented at the AMG of the ŷAV Liverpool Section in May 2020. One pupil (together with his/her teacher) will be invited to this event to present the poster and answer a few questions. The winning posters will be selected after the second heat. A third heat will take place on the Isle of Man at the beginning of December. The overall winner of the competition will be announced after this third heat and the team from the winning school will represent the Liverpool Section at the national final which will take place towards the end of Spring Term in London.
