Introduction

Water is essential for all life! Water is the gift of life! But good quality water is becoming increasingly hard to find due to human activities. In many countries this problem is exacerbated by political and economic issues, a lack of knowledge and education, poverty and limited scientific or medical data to assess the link between local water quality, agricultural sustainability and human health. The World Bank reports that 80 countries now have water shortages that threaten health and economies, while 40% of the world's population have no access to clean water or sanitation. And it is not just a 'third world' problem: many major developed nations are reporting serious water shortages.
