Fully booked: Pan Africa Chemistry Network congress 2018: Managing resources through chemistry: Wealth not waste

6 - 8 November 2018, Nairobi, Kenya

Introduction

FULLY BOOKED

If you would like to be added to the waiting list for this event, please email events@rsc.org to request to be added.

This year's Pan Africa Chemistry Network (PACN) Congress will take place in Nairobi, Kenya for researchers and policy-makers, to discuss current research, challenges, new developments and crucial issues on the topic of waste management

The PACN Congress is our flagship annual event for the African chemical sciences community and consists of lectures, exhibitions, posters and networking.

The Congress will reflect the diversity of science and research that can help solve challenges of waste management and innovative uses of waste product, with a focus on the chemical sciences.  The conference will give all participants the opportunity to engage with other scientists, hear about cutting edge research and policy and exchange ideas.

The basic requirements of society include water, food, shelter, medicines, energy, chemicals, transport and manufactured goods. Science and engineering are fundamental to meeting these needs in a sustainable way. The principles of Green Chemistry and sustainable manufacturing are crucial if Africa is to enjoy economic growth by using, and at the same time preserving, its unique resources and biological diversity.

In 2010, we held the PACN Congress on the topic of ‘Wealth Not Waste; Green science and engineering for sustainable growth in Africa’ and this led to the publication of a Policy Report.

In 2014, we held a joint meeting with the National Science Foundation of China, hosted in South Africa. Please see the programme by clicking the link.

Building on these previous meetings, we now want to bring the community together once again to look at the progress that has been made, opportunities available and any new challenges faced.

Themes

There will be 4 themes covered in the scientific sessions:
  1. Green Chemistry: Environmentally Sustainable Practices
This session will explore the progress, opportunities and challenges of green chemistry including: sustainable chemical feedstocks, alternative solvents, novel reactions, processes and catalysts, and also disposal and recovery of chemicals. Green Chemistry related to all application areas may be included.

  2. Biomaterials and Natural Products
These are a potentially lucrative business for Africa. We will explore their potential uses along with the role of the chemical sciences in their synthesis, extraction, purification and structural determination.

  3. Waste Reduction, Capturing and Recycling
Tackling the challenges of managing waste products. This will include the technologies and processes for effectively collecting, sorting and processing the waste streams, including identification and sorting, operational and handling methods, the chemical and pre-processing steps necessary to make the recycled waste viable for reuse, as well as monitoring and reducing environmental damage.

  4. Sustainable Management of Plastic Waste: The Case of Kenya
In 2017, Kenya introduced the world’s toughest law against plastic carrier bags. Using Kenya as a case study, we will discuss the challenges faced and explore strategies for reducing plastic in the environment, specifically sourcing alternatives and increasing the capture and recycling to minimise waste and environmental damage caused by plastic waste.
Each of these topics may also include discussions on aspects of the following areas where relevant to the overall topic: appropriate monitoring - Analytical chemistry, engagement to help ensure resources are managed effectively; regulatory issues; socioeconomic issues: and work to define or understand ‘The African context’.
Speakers
Abstract Submission
ORAL ABSTRACT SUBMISSION IS NOW CLOSED.

There are 2 types of abstract submission for this year’s PACN Congress; oral talks and flash presentations.  Funding to attend is ONLY available for African scientists, working in Africa, selected by the scientific committee to give oral talks or flash presentations.

Oral presentation abstracts

Approximately 10 people will be selected to give oral presentations to the conference audience (20-minute slot).  Those wishing to present need to select which session is best suited to their research topic.  Full funding is available to the selected oral presenters.
Deadline: 13 August 2018

Flash presentation abstracts

Approximately 10 people will be selected to give a flash presentation to the conference audience (10-minute slot). Those wishing to present need to select which session is best suited to their research topic.  You are also required to produce a poster on your research.  Full funding is available to the selected flash presenters.
Deadline: 13 August 2018

Poster abstracts

We welcome all registered delegates to bring a poster for display. There is no requirement to submit a poster abstract in advance, and spaces at the poster display will be allocated on a first come- first served basis at the venue during registration. Poster boards can fit up to A0 size.

There is NO FUNDING AVAILABLE to poster presenters.
