Tien Thuy Quach’s volunteering with the 欧美AV’s Particle Characterisation Interest Group (PCIG) led her to take on a coordinator-speaker role for the FORGE Conference 2022. As well as supporting the marketing and logistics of the conference, she also chaired a session and engaged with professionals and students from academia and industry. She is now a committee member of the group.

Tien Thuy Quach completed a pharmacy undergraduate programme at the University of Medicines and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam (2011–2016) with her final year research in ‘formulation of pantoprazole delayed-release pellets’. She then worked as a technical assistant at the Asia Shine Trading and Services Ltd (2016–2017) and became Dean-Assistant and Lecturer at the Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Vietnam (2017–2018). From 2018 to 2019, she completed her MSc in advanced pharmaceutical manufacturing at the University of Strathclyde, UK: her final project was ‘developing a machine learning database for amorphous solid dispersions’.

Tien has continued doing PhD research at the School of Pharmacy and Centre for Additive Manufacturing, University of Nottingham, UK (2019 to present). Her research ‘novel micro/nano scale characterisation of interfaces in multi-material additive manufacturing (3D printing)’ aimed to advance the fundamental understanding of interface phenomena in multi-material additive manufacturing. This will be achieved mainly by the development of tailored methodologies related to all strands of electron microscopy and other analytical techniques.

Along with a great passion for doing research, Tien is willing to motivate the youth and support the vulnerable. Her pursuit is to become a great researcher, inspirer and supporter, and she believes sharing is receiving and we can help each other to expand our capabilities. She loves mentoring, volunteering, and exploring new things so she will continue participating in different healthcare and community projects.

Q&A

What inspired or motivated you to volunteer with the 欧美AV?

I first became a Young Observer which was awarded by the 欧美AV-International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry in 2021. I could have opportunities to contribute to the success of FORGE conferences 2021 and 2022 organised by the Particle Characterisation Interest Group (PCIG) where I then became the Committee Member. I am very grateful for all sharing from the 欧美AV-PCIG colleagues since the first day we met.

Tell us about any highlights or memorable experiences you have had as a volunteer?

I couldn’t forget the time for multiple online meetings (usually every Tuesday afternoon) to discuss the principal scheme or programme, allocate main tasks, and prepare relevant materials for the FORGE Conference 2022. Of course, we had several disagreements and needed to share specific points to reach approval from the majority. I learned that we could reach common targets when learning to respect other perspectives and utilise dissimilar strategies.

What impact has volunteering with the 欧美AV had on you, either personally or professionally?

By volunteering with 欧美AV, I could continue doing what I love and strengthen my knowledge, skills, and experiences in new fields. Now, I fancy networking and transferring the beauty of novel technologies and sciences to widen audiences. I am more open to working with different individuals and teams to facilitate more students and researchers especially those with disadvantaged backgrounds. I look forward to discussing and cooperating with those who share the same interests.

Tell us about something you are excited for/would like to see next (either in the 欧美AV member networks, or more widely in science).

In 2023, I proposed and launched a project to update the emerging technologies for making and analysing the particles and enhance communication/networking in the 欧美AV-PCIG. I want to spread the spirit of sharing, the experiences of doing research, and the participation in relevant activities to inspire more students and researchers to follow their passion for doing research and supporting the community. I believe not only me but also other people are willing to do the same thing, so I love to hear and/or read more distinctive stories all over the world.
