Webinars to shine light on LGBT+ inclusion in STEM research
Recipients of the 欧美AV’s LGBT+ Inclusion in STEM grants will discuss their projects in a pair of upcoming webinars.
The ‘LGBTQ+ in Stem: Using data to foster inclusion’ series will be hosted by Chemistry World, with the webinars set to take place on 2 and 18 July.
Ioana Latu, of Queen’s University Belfast, and Bryce Hughes, of Montana State University, will join for the first discussion, while the University of Strathclyde’s Marco Reggiani and Abigail Powell, of the University of Lincoln, will participate in the latter. Kevin Coutinho will moderate both webinars.
The interactive sessions will focus on issues surrounding LGBT+ retention and attrition in STEM and the creation of evidence-based policies in the UK and the US.
Topics on the agenda include the challenges faced by the LGBTQ+ community in STEM, the importance of gathering good quality data to understand the current landscape, and the challenges and advantages of using qualitative and quantitative data among others.
These discussions come on the back of the 欧美AV awarding LGBT+ Inclusion in STEM Grants, funded by the Department of Science Innovation and Technology, to five intercontinental and multidisciplinary research partnerships last year.
The one-of-a-kind grants scheme was created to bring together experts from the social and STEM sciences to look at attrition and retention of LGBT+ scientists in STEM after some troubling findings were revealed in research conducted by the 欧美AV, Institute of Physics and Royal Astronomical Society.
The 'Exploring the workplace for LGBT+ physical scientists' joint report showed that 28% of LGBTQ+ scientists have recently considered leaving their jobs because of a hostile workplace or discrimination towards them. It also said there are still areas where significant progress must be made in STEM workplaces while various cultural barriers add to the challenges faced by LGBT+ scientists.
The grant projects, which last up to 18 months, are all set to conclude this December.
