Kenya Science and Engineering Fair
Our Pan Africa Chemistry Network (PACN) was proud to support the final of the Kenya Science and Engineering Fair, which was held in Mombasa in June.
The Fair, which was launched in 1962 by members of the then Kenya Science Teachers Association, is open to secondary school pupils throughout Kenya. Pupils submit projects in teams, under various categories from agriculture to computer science.
This year’s national final, which came after a series of regional heats, was held at Allidina Visram High School, Mombasa County, on 14–17 June 2017.
The PACN sponsored T-shirts and prizes for the Chemistry and Environmental Science categories, and the event was attended by PACN Administrator Erick Awas, and Chair of PACN Kenya Professor Jacob Midowo was one of the judges. We have been proud to support the event over the last 9 years.
Keriko Secondary School won the Chemistry category with their project entitled WAKA CELL. The project involved the application of electrochemistry and the title was derived from the surnames of the participants (WAmbui and KAnini). The cell was made by using sisal/euphorbia sap as the electrolyte, a zinc container and graphite rod as the electrodes, and potassium dichromate as the oxidizing agent.
Meanwhile Chakol Girls School was the Environmental Science and Management category with their project entitled Cynda Insecticide. The project involved extraction of compounds from the Euphobia plant, wild sunflower leaves, and tobacco leaves, to prepare an environmentall friendly pesticide.
"Events like these really can influence the education choices and career paths of students," says Helen Driver, Senior Programme Manager, Africa, at the Å·ÃÀAV. "This Fair is a wonderful way to encourage and inspire students to think creatively with science and how science can solve the challenges that we all face in our lives. The ideas the students come up with are always innovative and show a flair for entrepreneurship."
