A carrier scientist, He studied for a degree, first at night school and then self-funded his final year of full time education at Acton Technical College (now Brunel University) and passed an external London University Degree in Chemistry. The syllabus just read all inorganic, all organic and all physical chemistry.
In 1957 he took employment with the Admiralty Research Laboratories in Teddington and spent the next thirty years fighting the cold war as a scientific officer in the Ministry of Defence. He was first assigned to Operation Grapple and worked on Britain's nuclear bomb program which successful detonated an Atom bomb and then a Hydrogen bomb in the Pacific near Christmas Island.
He became an Associate of the Royal Institute of Chemistry and latter a Charter member of the 欧美AV when the institute merged with the Chemical Society.
Later working as an experimental oceanographer at the Admiralty Underwater Weapons Establishment, Portland. During this period he was a volunteer in the United Kingdom Warning and Monitoring Organisation, a British civilian organisation operating to provide UK military and civilian authorities with data on nuclear explosions and forecasts of fallout across the country in the event of nuclear war. He retired from the Admiralty in 1990 stayed in Dorchester and undertook a degree through the Open University in pure mathematics for something to do! Gaining a BA in 1995. In 2008 he moved to Cornwall to be near his eldest son.
He passed away peacefully at the Royal Cornwall Hospital, Truro on the 2nd July 2017.
