Neutron Scattering Group

The Neutron Scattering Group is one of the 欧美AV's many Interest Groups and is joint with the Institute of Physics (IoP). The Interest Groups are member driven groups which exist to benefit 欧美AV members, and the wider chemical science community, in line with the 欧美AV's strategy and charter.

Aims

The Neutron Scattering Group works to promote neutron science actively with its user community. Our aims are to:

Organise events to develop neutron user links and discuss results from neutron experiments
Provide links to and from UK-funded neutron sources and the
Represent neutron scattering and its users within the IOP and 欧美AV learned societies
Support actively early career researchers to engage with neutron scattering

Our mission is to support and develop the UK neutron community in a rapidly changing global neutron landscape, and to represent UK neutron scattering externally.

Additionally, we award the and the Don Paul McKenzie Thesis Prize annually.

Examples of activities include organising and contributing to conferences and schools involving neutron scattering research, e.g. the in 2017, 2021 and 2023 the 2018 and 2019, the biennial and the science day as part of The Neutron and Muon User Meeting 2022.

Activities

To disseminate information about the neutron facilities available to as wide an audience as possible, particularly to newer entrants to the field and to those who work in related areas but who may occasionally wish to utilise neutron scattering techniques.
To circulate a newsletter to Group members two or three times each year.
To organise informal one, two or three-day meetings/conferences covering various aspects of neutron scattering. These may range from the more fundamental aspects of condensed matter research to applied neutron scattering with increased participation from industrial concerns.
To host a regular introductory summer school to cover basic theory and recently developed techniques.
To collaborate with other groups and societies in connection with more general conferences allowing the comparison of neutron scattering methods with other techniques.
