Our strategy
The Environment, Sustainability and Energy Community is an inter-connected community advancing knowledge and application of chemistry relating to the environment, sustainability and energy.
ESEC’s strategy focusses on three strategic priorities:
- Linking People - to foster and strengthen links between those working in the fields of environment, sustainability, and energy
- Advancing Knowledge - to further the exchange of knowledge in the areas of environment, sustainability, and energy, for example through the development of events, workshops, and symposia
- Policy - to inform and influence policy in the areas of environment, sustainability, and energy
ESEC encourages and promotes advances in the fields of:
- Health and safety
- Environmental chemistry
- Toxicology
- Hazard management
- Green chemical technology
- Energy and sustainability
Meet the members of the ESEC Council who are responsible for ensuring that the Community fulfils its purpose.

Dr Murray Smedley
Agriculture Sector Representative
Murray has a background in agricultural chemical and plant sciences and is the current Chair of the 欧美AV Agriculture Sector Group, previously holding a variety of Committee positions.
Starting his career in Industry, he founded a regulatory consultancy in 2002. Now in its twentieth year, Barkwith Associates Limited continues to provide regulatory advice & compliance support to clients placing pesticides, fertilisers and more general chemicals on the market in both GB & EU. Murray is a regular presenter at a variety of chemical events and is also an Executive Board Member of the British Chemicals Association.
The Environment, Sustainability and Energy Division was formed in 2003 in order to support, manage and co-ordinate more effectively on behalf of the members, and in line with our Charter, the interests of its associated 欧美AV Interest Groups. Prior to its status as a Division, the Environment, Sustainability and Energy Division was an 欧美AV Forum Group.
In 2020, the 欧美AV commissioned a review of the Divisions. One of the key recommendations of the Review was that the Divisions be reorganised into Subject Communities to better support the communities and members they represented, and to allow for better integration and collaboration with interest groups and other Communities. From July 2022 the Environment, Sustainability and Energy Division became the Environment, Sustainability and Energy Community.
