It's the 300th anniversary of the Newcomen Steam Engine but why should we celebrate, and what's it got to do with Chemistry? Well - where to start? Steam engines revolutionised the industrial world, they allowed larger scale mining, electricity generation, transport...... As for the Chemistry: metals, fuels, lubricants, welding and the larger scale power generation allowed for larger scale mineral extraction and as our natural resources dwindle chemists pitch their wit to generate steam in other ways. Through a series of exhibitions and activities you will find out about how steam technology played, and still plays an integral part in our modern lives.
