A relaxed lunch and lecture for Å·ÃÀAV members and their guests. The lecture will be delivered by Dr Christopher Foster titled - The forensic investigation of arson.
The impact of arson in the UK will be briefly reviewed, together with formal measures taken over the years to address the problem and increase both detection rates and the success of prosecutions.
A formal approach to the fire scene investigation will be outlined, introducing some of the more important diagnostic features of evidence relied on to identify the area of origin of a fire.
Diagnostic features of deliberately started fires will be reviewed in some detail. Evidence sampling procedures will be described, together with a range of analytical techniques commonly employed to assist with interpreting features of evidence and with identifying perpetrators. A case study will be presented illustrating how a novel analytical technique was developed to assist with the identification of the perpetrator of a murder and arson crime that was tried in Chelmsford Crown Court in 2002.
The cost of the lunch will be £10 per attendee
