Our late Summer event this year is a tour of historic WWI sites around Ploegsteert, West Flanders. This year marked 100 years since the first introduction of chemical warfare, and our fascinating coach and walking tour will take us around some of the recently excavated archaeological sites in the area where some of the first gas attacks occurred. Our tour will be led by expert guide Claude Verhaeghe.
The coach will take us from Ypres to the monumental Ploegsteert Memorial. From here (weather permitting) we will have a walking tour along Mud Lane to visit a series of Military Cemeteries and visit the site of the Christmas Day truce. With the coach we will then visit the site of Bruce Bainsfather’s cottage, the Ultimo and Factory Farm craters, le Gheer, and the sector in which Winston Churchill served in 1916. In the case of bad weather we will visit Mesen, the visitor centre and the church/crypt where Adolf Hitler was treated during the war.
We will meet in Ypres (exact venue tbc) and depart by coach at 0900 and arrive back in Ypres c.1400. A sandwich lunch and drink is included in the tour. Sturdy walking shoes/boots and outdoor clothing are essential and a small bottle of water is recommended. This tour is not suitable for pushchairs or children under 10 years.
Cost of participation is €30 per person (no concessions) and the maximum group size for the coach tour is 25 – so it will be ‘first paid, first registered’. The cost includes the guided coach tour and lunch.
