Louis Gossett Jr., the groundbreaking actor whose career spanned over five decades and who became the first Black actor to win an Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor for his memorable role in 鈥淎n Officer and a Gentleman,鈥 has died.

Gossett, who was born on May 27, 1936, in Brooklyn, N.Y., was 87. Recognized early on for his resilience and nearly unmatched determination, Gossett arrived in Los Angeles in 1967 after a stint on Broadway.

He sometimes spoke of being pulled over by law enforcement en route to Beverly Hills, once being handcuffed to a tree, which he remembered as a jarring introduction to the racial tensions of Hollywood.

In his memoir 鈥淎n Actor and a Gentleman,鈥 Gossett recounted the ordeal, noting the challenges faced by Black artists in the industry.

Despite the hurdles, Gossett鈥檚 talent shone brightly, earning him acclaim in groundbreaking productions such as 鈥淎 Raisin in the Sun鈥 alongside Sidney Poitier. His Emmy-winning portrayal of Fiddler in 鈥淩oots鈥 solidified his status as a trailblazer, navigating a landscape fraught with racial prejudice.

According to the , which interviewed him in 2005, Gossett鈥檚 journey into the limelight began during his formative years at PS 135 and Mark Twain Junior High School, where he demonstrated early leadership as the student body president.

His passion for the arts blossomed when he starred in a 鈥淵ou Can鈥檛 Take It With You鈥 production at Abraham Lincoln High School, catching the attention of talent scouts who propelled him onto Broadway鈥檚 stage in 鈥淭ake A Giant Step.鈥 His stellar performance earned him the prestigious Donaldson Award for Best Newcomer to Theatre in 1952.

Though initially drawn to sports, Gossett鈥檚 towering 6鈥4鈥 frame and athletic prowess led him to receive a basketball scholarship at New York University. Despite being drafted by the New York Knicks in 1958, Gossett pursued his love for acting, honing his craft at The Actors Studio under the tutelage of luminaries like John Sticks and Peggy Fury.

In 1961, Gossett鈥檚 talent caught the eye of Broadway directors, leading to roles in acclaimed productions such as 鈥淩aisin in the Sun鈥 and 鈥淭he Blacks,鈥 alongside legends like James Earl Jones, Cicely Tyson, Roscoe Lee Brown, and Maya Angelou. Transitioning seamlessly to television, Gossett graced small screens with appearances in notable shows like 鈥淭he Bush Baby鈥 and 鈥淐ompanions in Nightmare.鈥

Gossett鈥檚 silver screen breakthrough came with his role in 鈥淭he Landlord,鈥 paving the way for a prolific filmography that spanned over 50 movies and hundreds of television shows. From 鈥淪kin Game鈥 to 鈥淟ackawanna Blues,鈥 Gossett captivated audiences with his commanding presence and versatile performances.

However, his portrayal of 鈥淔iddler鈥 in Alex Haley鈥檚 groundbreaking miniseries 鈥淩oots鈥 earned Gossett critical acclaim, including an Emmy Award. The HistoryMakers noted that his golden touch extended to the big screen, where his role as Sergeant Emil Foley in 鈥淎n Officer and a Gentleman鈥 earned him an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, making him a trailblazer in Hollywood history.

Beyond the glitz and glamour of Hollywood, Gossett was deeply committed to community activism. In 1964, he co-founded a theater group for troubled youth alongside James Earl Jones and Paul Sorvino, setting the stage for his lifelong dedication to mentoring and inspiring the next generation. Gossett鈥檚 tireless advocacy for racial equality culminated in the establishment of Eracism, a nonprofit organization dedicated to combating racism both domestically and abroad.

Throughout his illustrious career, Gossett remained a beacon of strength and resilience, using his platform to uplift marginalized voices and champion social change. Satie and Sharron, Gossett鈥檚 children, survive him.

Toski Yvonne Bolte-Brundage was born on March 3, 1956. She received her angel wings into the kingdom of heaven on March 7, 2024. She was the only daughter of Hubert Bolte, Jr., and Gypsy Fitzpatrick Bolte. If you have ever wondered about the origin of Toski鈥檚 unique name, it came from her parent’s knowledge of the Italian opera TOSCA. Yet, they opted to use the more distinctive spelling.

She and her older brother, Hubert Bolte, Jr. (affectionately known as Bud), grew up on Eldridge Avenue on the East Side of Columbus, Ohio, at a time when neighborhoods helped shape their community’s lives. Her family鈥檚 reach stretched even further, as their mother was affectionately known as 鈥淢om Bolte鈥 to the numerous families whose children she nurtured as a home-based caregiver. Toski also went by the moniker 鈥淭oy鈥 or 鈥淛on鈥, given to her by her father.

Toski attended Pilgrim Elementary School, Champion Junior High School, and East High School: all cultural icons in an era of Black pride and academic excellence. She and her family were also members of the historic St. Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church.

After graduating from high school, Toski attended the college of Ohio State University, where she earned a degree in dental hygiene. During her collegiate years, she also became part of the Elegant Eighteen line of women, which was initiated into the Theta Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated in 1976. Through her association with Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (AKA), she established a lifelong sisterhood and an eternal kinship with like-minded women of God.

Toski eventually moved to Cincinnati to begin her career as a dental hygienist. During that time, she was associated with both the practice of Dr. Mark Fleming (1989) and Dr. Alec Tackett. The latter evolved into a 20-year position where she endeared herself to her patients and her work family as only Toski could. Even after she left the practice, her patients would often check on her through their bond of friendship.

A mutual friend would eventually introduce Toski to Charles Brundage, although (by chance) they both had attended York Street Methodist Church on a previous Sunday. Toski noticed Charles, but Charles didn鈥檛 recognize her until fate intervened, and an actual introduction occurred at another venue. It just so happens that York Street Church was Charles鈥 childhood church, so he was often focused on worship under the leadership of Bishop Todd O鈥橬eal.

After their introduction, Charles obtained her phone number but did not call Toski for two weeks due to his extensive travel schedule with the Chrysler Corporation.

Little did Toski know her personal life was about to take a dramatic turn once they began to pursue one another. 鈥淗e who finds a [true and faithful] wife finds a good thing and obtains favor and approval from the LORD.鈥(Proverbs 18:22 Amplified Bible)

Their chance introduction seemed to be God-ordained, so Charles and Toski decided to marry in a destination wedding in St. Thomas (Virgin Islands) on October 27, 1991. Given they wanted to start worshipping together, they chose a mutual church and were led to Corinthian Baptist.

They quickly decided to start a family and began the process naturally. After attempts to conceive naturally were no longer a viable option, Toski and Charles were led to apply to Catholic Social Services to grow their family. They were blessed with their first child, Phoenix, in 2003 and were subsequently chosen to parent siblings: Jordan, Naomi, Noelle, and Aliyah. Under the parental guidance of both Toski and Charles, what a blessed family it has become!

In the meantime, Toski continued her career as a dental hygienist while raising her girls. Her work ethic was unmatched. After 20 years of service, she was diagnosed with a mild case of Parkinson鈥檚 disease in 2014. Even though she could no longer do what she loved, she became more determined than ever to manage her diagnosis by diligently exercising every day and attending a boxing class once a week.

Throughout her extraordinary life, Toski exemplified the biblical passages found in Proverbs 31, which set the standard she would follow as a blessed woman, a devoted wife, and a loving mother.

WOMAN:

鈥淲ho can find a virtuous woman? For her price is far above rubies鈥 (Verse 10)

WIFE:

鈥淭he heart of her husband trust in her, and he will have no lack of gain鈥 (Verse 11)

MOTHER:

鈥淗er children arise and call her blessed鈥 (Verse 28)

Toski also blessed the people around her through her daily actions and involvement with her extended church family, her work family, her AKA Family, her North Avondale Montessori School family, her Walnut Hills School family, her Purcell Marian School family, and Clark Montessori School family.

Toski leaves not to mourn but to cherish her precious memories: her husband (Charles); her children (Phoenix, Jordan, Naomi, Noelle, and Aliyah); her brother, Hubert (Bud) Bolte; her sister-in-law, Betty; her dear niece, Jenna Bolte; and countess family members and friends.

May we all continue to live for the Lord as Toski Yvonne Bolte-Brundage lived throughout her extraordinary life!

Brigid Kelly, the Hamilton County auditor who recently stepped down from her position amid her two-year battle with cancer, died March 26, her family said.

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine ordered that flags at all public buildings and grounds in Hamilton County and at the Ohio Statehouse fly at half-mast from sunrise to sunset on April 4, the day of Kelly’s funeral. The Hamilton County Commissioners ordered all flags in the county to be at half-mast.

“She was a treasured wife, daughter and sister, a valued friend and a true public servant,” her family said.

“Fran and I are saddened by the death of Hamilton County Auditor Brigid Kelly,” DeWine said. 鈥淟ike many who worked with her, I knew Brigid to be cordial, collaborative and willing to work with both parties to help advance the interests of Ohioans.”

Kelly, a Norwood native and daughter of a former Norwood Mayor, attended St. Ursula Academy. She graduated from Xavier University with her bachelor’s degree in聽 entrepreneurship and marketing, and a Master of 欧美AV Degree in Labor and Employment Relations from the University of Cincinnati. She was elected to the Norwood City Council one year after graduating from college. She later was elected as a state representative for the 31st District of Ohio, which includes Norwood, Amberley, Silverton and more.

Kelly spent more than a decade working for members of the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 75 (UFCW75), representing union members in the grocery and food processing industries. From 2016 to 2022, she was a State Representative for Ohio House District 31 and served as Democratic Caucus Whip.

She fought in the State House for hardworking families and focused on issues that impact all Ohioans such as good wages, affordable healthcare benefits, and safe workplaces. Kelly focused on ensuring that Ohio鈥檚 children receive the best education by making investments in local schools, holding corporations accountable for taxpayer investments, and pursuing policies important to families, such as paid sick and family leave.

Kelly passed bipartisan legislation repealing the 鈥減ink tax鈥 in Ohio in order to eliminate sales taxes on feminine hygiene products. The vote was almost unanimous with only one 鈥渘o鈥 vote.

In 2022, she was elected to serve as Hamilton County Auditor, becoming the first woman to be elected to this position. Under her leadership, the Office of the Hamilton County Auditor completed the reappraisal of 350,000 parcels of real estate, modernized the Board of Revision process, and increased staff to create more equity.

鈥淚 got to know her when a group of us organized a grassroots presidential campaign for this unknown guy from Illinois [President Barack Obama]. She was so much fun to work with and we had a blast! I鈥檝e adored her ever since,鈥 said Vice Mayor Kearney. 鈥淲hen I kicked off my campaign for City Council in 2023, I asked Brigid to give my introduction. As busy as she was, she didn鈥檛 hesitate to say 鈥榶es鈥 and I was really honored. She always had a smile and warmth that made everyone feel important.鈥

Kelly resigned as Hamilton County Auditor the week before she passed. Hamilton County Commissioner Denise Driehaus teared up in making the announcement. “As many know, Brigid was diagnosed with cancer just under two years ago,” Driehaus said. “She has fought this disease with her typical rigor while continuing to serve as the county auditor.”

Driehaus said Kelly asked commissioners to appoint Chief Deputy Auditor Amy Humphrey as the acting auditor until a replacement is selected. Kelly requested that State Rep. Jessica Miranda ultimately is chosen to fill her seat.

Fellow commissioners, President Alicia Reece and Stephanie Summerow Dumas celebrated Kelly’s passion and fight, as well as her love for others.

“(She was) showing up every day, even though she had her own fight, trying to fight for the citizens of this county,” Reece said. “It’s unbelievable.”

Cincinnati Mayor Aftab Pureval called Kelly’s death a “heart-wrenching moment.” He said, “Brigid Kelly was, and will remain, an irreplaceable kind of spirit. In everything she set herself to, she left a real and unique touch.” Pureval added, “You always knew she was there, that she cared and that she would do what it took to help.”

Rep. Dani Isaacsohn, Vice Mayor Jan-Michele Lemon Kearney, and Councilmember Anna Albi paid tribute to Kelly at the invitation of Norwood Councilmember Susan Hoover on March 26. Kelly passed later that evening. The next day, Kearney was joined by Mayor Pureval and all Cincinnati Councilmembers to honor her.

Ohio GOP chair Alex Triantifilou said he had a “very positive image of [Kelly] as a kind, professional and gracious person.”

House Minority Leader Allison Russo (D-Upper Arlington) said, 鈥淩ep. Brigid Kelly was one of the best lawmakers I have had the honor to serve with in the Ohio General Assembly. Her kind, principled servant leadership embodied the best of politics and all that we as public servants aspire to be.聽

鈥淏rigid’s leadership on issues, from paid family leave to better wages and stronger communities, improved the lives of working Ohio families and charted a course for the next generation of Democratic leadership in our state.

鈥淏rigid genuinely cared about and connected with her constituents in every role she had. I am heartbroken for our collective loss and share my deepest sympathies with her husband Steve, her family, and all who were fortunate to know one of the strongest, most passionate, and most effective public servants in our state鈥 Brigid Kelly.鈥

CINCINNATI 鈥 Wilberforce University men’s basketball coach Mark Mitchell, who led the Taft High School boys basketball team to its first state championship, has died. Mitchell was 56 years old.

Mitchell, the father of Indiana Fever guard and former Ohio State star聽聽was the Wilberforce University men’s basketball coach the past four seasons. Wilberforce is an NAIA program in Wilberforce, Ohio (Greene County).

Withrow boys basketball coach Berdo Allen, a 1996 Taft graduate, said Mitchell made a significant impact on countless lives. Mitchell was assistant coach while Allen played at Taft.

“He was tough and loving at the same time,” Allen said. “It just took my breath away (hearing the news). He always said if ever needed anything to call him. His honesty got us prepared for the real world.”

Prior to Wilberforce, Mitchell returned to coach high school basketball in the Cincinnati area after he had been an Ohio State women’s basketball assistant coach for four seasons. Mitchell helped his daughter Kelsey become Ohio State鈥檚 first four-time All-American in women鈥檚 basketball among several other accolades. Kelsey Mitchell was selected by the Indiana Fever as the No. 2 overall selection in the聽

“As a program, we are devastated to hear of the passing of former assistant coach Mark Mitchell,” Ohio State women’s basketball head coach Kevin McGuff said in a statement to WCPO 9. “Mark was extremely dedicated to his family, friends and players. His passion for young people allowed him to positively shape the lives of so many who had to the privilege of playing for him. We mourn with Cheryl, Kelsey, Chelsea, Kevin, Cam and the extended family. Mark will always remain in our thoughts and prayers.”

Mark Mitchell led Taft to the聽聽in its first-ever state final appearance. Taft won 25 games that season and never lost to a team from the state of Ohio.

Indian Hill boys basketball coach Ricardo Hill said Mitchell’s contributions to high school basketball are very significant especially for Taft’s state championship. He said Taft’s basketball program had “remarkable” success in basketball and beyond thanks to Mitchell’s leadership.

“It’s a sad day for Cincinnati,” Hill said.

During Mitchell’s tenure at Taft, the Senators won eight Cincinnati Metro Athletic Conference titles, nine sectional and four district titles and the state title. For his efforts, he was voted CMAC coach of the year eight times.

Mitchell turned around the Senators鈥 program instantly in his first year, going 22-3 and winning the city championship after inheriting a program coming off 10 consecutive losing seasons, according to his coaching biography.

“Coach Mark Mitchell was a motivational and inspirational coach that always shared his passion and energy with the students of CPS,” said Josh Hardin, Cincinnati Public Schools Athletics Manager.

“He was a different kind of coach, he was a state champion level coach that elevated the students and staff around him. “His presence in the basketball world and Cincinnati community will be sorely missed.”

Prior to his appointment at Taft, Mitchell served as an assistant coach at Winton Woods High School from 2001-03 where he helped the Warriors to a Division I state runner-up finish in 2002.

Former longtime La Salle basketball coach Dan Fleming was friends with Mitchell for many years.

“He was a big-hearted person who cared about his guys,” Fleming said. “It’s just a tremendous loss for basketball and Cincinnati specifically.”

Mitchell also coached at Western Hills for the 2018-19 season. He previously coached at Western Hills as a varsity boys basketball assistant and junior varsity head coach in 1997-98. He was the program鈥檚 varsity summer league head coach in 1997.

In addition to coaching, Mitchell worked as a physical education and health teacher at Taft (2003-13), Winton Woods (2002-03) and in the Lakota Schools from 1993-2002.

Mitchell, a 1985 Princeton High School graduate, was an offensive tackle on the Vikings’ 1983 Division I football state championship team. He later played at Eastern Kentucky University.

“He was a Princeton legend,” Allen said.

Following the announcement of his retirement, tributes poured in, congratulating and thanking him for almost 40 years on the Local 12 news desk.鈥欌

Outside of the newsroom, his contributions were countless. He volunteered for a number of patriotic events in Kenton County, including the master of ceremonies at the dedication of the Northern Kentucky 911 Memorial.

鈥淗e was just so warm and genuine and really passionate about the causes that were close to his own heart,鈥 said Lori Fovel of WKRC. 鈥淎 stroke survivor himself, Mr. Lomax considered promoting heart health as an important part of his community work. It led to the American Heart Association calling him the 鈥渦ltimate champion.鈥

He was also part of the SPCA family. For years he hosted the Pet Telethon and made appearances at the Fur Ball. Outside of the SPCA, John was known to have a deep love for his two dogs 鈥淛ohnny Cash鈥 and 鈥淪noop Dog.鈥

鈥淛ohn was a friend to the SPCA Cincinnati, one who believed in improved animal welfare for our city and supported our cause year-after-year. He will forever be respected and remembered not only as a journalist icon, renowned anchor, and media legend, but also as a compassionate, animal-loving soul. We will be forever grateful for all that John did for the SPCA,鈥 said Mike Retzlaff.

鈥淗e was a never say no kind of guy. Any request he knew would benefit other people and lift other people up. John was there in a drop of a hat,鈥 said Executive Director Tyler Bradshaw.

Besides giving back, Mr. Lomax also had a passion for two things, his love of jazz music and his love of photography.聽

Cincinnatian Hydeia Broadbent, who was born with the H.I.V virus, recently died at the age of 39.聽 A few years ago, I toured across Ohio with her and Marvelynn Brown, who contacted the virus by having unprotected sex. They toured universities and colleges, promoting the Test One Million Campaign, getting the word out about stopping the spread of Aids and H.I.V.

On this tour, a number of celebrities joined the week-long campaign. Thanks to Hydeia, over her life, millions were educated, stigmas were broken and attitudes about H.I.V and Aids were changed.

Hydeia, you made a difference.
