CINCINNATI — City officials announced Tuesday that all of Cincinnati Recreation Commission’s 24 pools will open on time this year, following years of staffing shortages that have forced several community pools to close or remain closed in recent years.

Since 2020, the city has struggled to open all of its pools, instead opting to only open a handful each year amid lifeguard staffing shortages.

In 2022, CRC announced it would only be able to open three of its pools on Memorial Day weekend, with five additional pools opening later into the season. Then, in 2023, lifeguard shortages struck again and many of the city’s pools sat empty throughout the summer.

This year, officials said three pools will open on Memorial Day weekend, with 17 opening the following weekend. The final four pools will open on the weekend of June 10.

City officials said during a Tuesday afternoon press conference that the difference between this year and last is mostly a matter of priority: Officials said they are working on being intentional about giving children a place to spend their time this summer.

All-In Cincinnati Coalition Meeting Save the Date

🗓 Celebrate progress and plan the future with us! Mark your calendars for the All-In Cincinnati Coalition Meeting on Thursday, May 23, 2024, from 3-5pm. We’re rounding off our 5-year strategic plan and embarking on a new 3-year journey. Your insights are vital as we continue to advance racial equity. 🌟 Stay tuned for more details and don’t forget to save the date!

All-In Cincinnati Policy Agenda

Welcome to the inaugural issue of the ‘All-In Cincinnati Policy Agenda,’ your monthly update on the progress in our policy and systemic advocacy efforts. As we launch this newsletter at the start of May, our goal is to provide our Coalition with real-time insights into the transformative work we’re undertaking across our five priority areas: health, housing, education, economic mobility, and justice. Join us on this journey to effect meaningful policy change and stay informed about how you can contribute to shaping a just and equitable society for Black women in Hamilton County.

Community Health Workers

All-In Cincinnati has launched an unprecedented model for healthcare systems through the placement of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in non-traditional settings. Led by All-In Program Manager, Tiffany George, CHWs are no longer restricted to just hospital settings but are also placed in public schools, court systems, Hamilton County Jobs and Family Services, and more.

This initiative is crucial for patients navigating the complex healthcare system, as CHWs provide essential education and connect with healthcare teams to address barriers that may hinder patient recovery and facilitate better health outcomes for Black women.

Goals

  • CHW Integration: Ensure Community Health Workers (CHWs) are integrated into both traditional and non-traditional healthcare settings.
  • SOP Development: Develop Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for CHWs in hospital settings

Progress

  • All-In Cincinnati CHWs have been placed across multiple settings in collaboration with bi3.

Take Action

  • Support our mission by learning more about the role of CHWs and the positive impact they have on healthcare.

Fostering Fair Appraisal Practices

We aim to enhance fairness in housing appraisals by advocating for policy changes that support the inclusion and advancement of Black women in the appraisal industry. This effort seeks to ensure appraisals are free from racial bias, promoting equity in property valuation.

Goals

  • Licensure Reform: Advocate for modifications to Ohio’s appraisal licensure to include a mentorship component that supports Black women.
  • Training Initiatives: Establish a training plan specifically targeting Black female appraisers.

Progress

  • We’ve intentionally engaged with educational and real estate sectors to begin developing partnerships for this initiative.

Get Involved

  • Help us transform the appraisal industry! If you are connected to educational bodies, real estate, or legislative platforms, or can mentor a future Black woman appraiser, please reach out to us by.

Voter Rights and Responsibilities

In our ongoing commitment to civic engagement, we emphasize the power and responsibility of voting. This year, in partnership with the League of Women Voters, we are focusing on educating the community about the importance of informed voting, particularly down the ballot, to honor the legacy and impact of Black women in shaping our society. All-In Cincinnati aims to provide comprehensive insights into various issues without bias, ensuring voters are well-informed.

Goals

  • Voter Education: Distribute an unbiased voter guide that highlights critical electoral issues.
  • Debate Facilitation: Moderate debates to facilitate informed discussions among voters.

Progress

  • Established partnerships for ongoing voter education.
  • Successfully hosted voter engagement panels focusing on comprehensive electoral education.

Engage

  • Enjoy a recap of our last panel discussion. Stay informed and active in your civic duties.

Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI)

In partnership with the City of Cincinnati, the Urban League of Greater Cincinnati, Cradle Cincinnati, and UpTogether, we enhance economic self-sufficiency and reduce poverty among Black women in Cincinnati by implementing a Guaranteed Basic Income (GBI) policy. This initiative aims to provide Black women with the financial freedom to make life-enhancing decisions.

In Cincinnati, Black women, particularly those aged 18-34, represent the highest demographic living in poverty. Providing a basic income can drastically alter their life, by allowing them greater agency over their personal and professional lives.

Goals

  • Launch Pilot: GBI pilot initiative providing $500 to $1,000 monthly to assess impacts on poverty alleviation and economic stability.
  • Policy Integration: Work with government and community leaders to ensure GBI policies allow recipients to maintain eligibility for other essential benefits, complementing their financial support without replacing existing aid.

Progress

  • Created a policy committee to craft legislation inclusive of Council Member Reggie Harris, State Representative Dani Isaacsohn, and Congressman Greg Landsman.

Learn More

  • Explore the potential of GBI in reducing economic inequality by from the 2023 Cincinnati National Day of Racial Healing.

Youth Advocacy Initiative

All-In Cincinnati is committed to creating enriched safe spaces for young Black women, fostering environments where they can thrive outside of home and school settings. By partnering with community leader, and All-In Cincinnati Core Team Member Iris Roley, we are collectively advocating for these enriched environments.

As the Consultant to the City Manager on the Collaborative Agreement, Iris will leverage her partnership with All-In Cincinnati, the City of Cincinnati, and many other non-profit organizations to bolster the well-being and development of Black girls in our community.

Goals

  • 3 P’s Implementation: Focus on creating spaces and opportunities for our youth, that incorporate paid apprenticeships (Paying), positive enforcements of cultural identity (Pride), and identifying interpersonal skills, talents, and abilities for our young Black women (Purpose).
  • Community Engagement: Collaborate with local organizations to create policies supporting the holistic growth of young Black women in safe, inclusive spaces.

On Set ATL presented Cincinnati native Kiah Clingman the organization’s Trailblazer Award at its 2nd Annual Slate Awards, an evening to honor the remarkable talent of Atlanta’s independent filmmakers.

“Kiah Clingman, an actor and producer powerhouse, has been leading the way in Atlanta and bringing life to projects. We are so proud to be awarding her as one of our recipients of our Trailblazer Awards,” said On Set ATL presenters.

“What a night,” Clingman said. “Little did I know my team and I would walk away with three awards. Eavesdropping on the Elders won Best Hair & Makeup, shout-out to Syretta, Shaneka, Sakeitha, and the entire team, and Best Costume Design and Wardrobe which would not have happened without my amazing Catrina. Eavesdropping is still making waves years later and I’m so beyond grateful.

“Also walked away with Best Producer for Hard Drive with Cherie. My heart couldn’t be more full. We created something special and I can’t wait for what we will do next.”

This event is not only a celebration of the past year’s achievements, but a platform to elevate and recognize the burgeoning talent within Atlanta’s film industry, providing opportunities for creatives to shine and receive the recognition they truly deserve, said officials with On Set ATL.

As more than just a screening event, On Set ATL is the epicenter for film creatives to converge, with a focus on connection, collaboration, and creation. These past two years have seen an impressive array of 14 in-person gatherings, drawing over 1500 guests and cultivating an online community that now has almost 3,000 members. The events have spotlighted award-winning talent, from filmmakers to actors, actresses, and producers, offering unrivaled networking opportunities and increasing their visibility within the film industry, they said.

“Atlanta creatives are immensely talented, but they don’t often get recognition and the opportunity they deserve. We hope to use this platform to build a bridge for new opportunities, and greater exposure by creating opportunities for creatives, and bringing awareness to their immense talent, giving them the recognition they deserve, they said.

The night shined the spotlight on three trailblazers making significant impacts in the filmmaking arena:

  • Kiah Clingman – An actress and award-winning producer whose project “The Color Book” notably received $1,000,000 from Tribeca and AT&T.
  • Isaiah John – An Atlanta native, Isaiah’s casting as Leon Simmons on FX’s “Snowfall” confirmed his rightful path in the arts, working alongside respected industry figures like the late John Singleton.
  • Kaye Singleton – Award-winning writer, producer, and actress known for her work on hit shows and films, including a standout six-season role as “Josie” on Saints & Sinners, Tyler Perry’s, The Oval, and show runner on AMC’s Covenant.

A graduate of Howard University, Kiah is the daughter of Jim and Sylvia Clingman, formerly of Cincinnati.

The Cincinnati Youth Choir, Ensemble in Residence at the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM), has announced that founder Robyn Lana will conclude her outstanding career with the Cincinnati Youth Choir (CYC) at the conclusion of the 2024-2025 season, after which she will be named Director Emerita and will continue to lead and engage the alumni choir and network.

Recognized as one of the leading children’s and youth choir conductors in the United States, Robyn Lana has actively worked with choruses ranging from children to adult for more than 40 years. Lana began CYC in 1993 with a small 35-voice ensemble. The program has blossomed into one of the most revered youth choral programs in the USA currently serving nearly 1000 singers each year. Beginning as an independent program, Lana collaborated with Dr. Earl Rivers in 2001 to bring CYC into the fold of the University of Cincinnati where the program was enhanced by the unmatched artistry and reputation of the College-Conservatory of Music. CYC has continued to grow while serving as the resident children’s choir for all of CCM’s choral, orchestral, and operatic works and offering internships and assistantships to choral and music education students.

Dr. Rivers, now a professor emeritus of conducting at CCM, venerated this partnership as an example for others to follow. “Robyn Lana created and developed the Cincinnati Youth Choir into a world-class organization that over 30 years has nurtured hundreds of greater Cincinnati children and youth in developing their musical, intellectual and social skills. The CYC’s relationship with the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music (CCM) as ‘Ensemble-in-Residence at CCM’ is a nationally unique partnership between an all-city Youth Choir and an internationally recognized Conservatory of Music. This partnership has become the gold standard role model for other youth choir organizations, and it has allowed several generations of CCM choral, music education, and voice students to develop their skills by engaging with the CYC as conductors, assistant conductors, accompanists, mentors, and administrators. Robyn’s legacy will have left Cincinnati with a crown jewel in the pantheon of Cincinnati’s outstanding musical organizations.”

Lana will continue to teach in the Miami University (Oxford, OH) Department of Music where she began in August 2022. Prior to teaching at Miami, she taught choral music education and women’s choir at Xavier University and was honored to teach at her alma mater, CCM for a semester in 2017.
